2012 Stroud Science Symposium

Neurosurgeon at KO science forum debunks cell phone-brain cancer link As the featured guest of Kingswood Oxford School's annual Stroud Science Symposium Friday, Jan. 20, neurosurgeon Theodore Schwartz, M.D. spoke on a variety of topics, including his assertion that there is no link between cell phone use and malignant brain tumors. "There is no convincing evidence that there is any link between cell phone use and brain cancer," said Schwartz, who is a professor of neurological surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and an attending neurological surgeon at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. During the all-school assembly, Schwartz also spoke of the importance of innovation and collaboration, particularly in the field of medicine. He explained how he and an ear, nose and throat surgeon have teamed up numerous times to successfully remove brain tumors using minimally invasive techniques. He showed video of an operation where a scope was inserted through one nostril and instruments were inserted through the other, while the surgeons used a video screen to guide them. "Don't accept the way things are currently done as the best way to do things," Schwartz said. "Push the boundaries." Schwartz, who received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard University, has provided commentary for numerous television shows on the major networks. He also has been consulted for stories that have appeared in publications including the New York Daily News, the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal. He recently co-authored two books -- "Endoscopic Pituitary Surgery" and "Practical Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery" -- and he has published numerous articles for medical journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neurosurgery, Epilepsia and The Journal of Neuroscience. Schwartz has been named to several "best of" lists, including New York's Super Doctors, Best Doctors in New York Magazine, America's Top Surgeons and America's Best Doctors. According to the Weill Cornell Physicians Web site, Schwartz "specializes in the surgical treatment of brain tumors, pituitary tumors and epilepsy using the latest techniques in computer-guided surgical navigation, minimally invasive endoscopy and microsurgery."
